Shkëmbi i Kavajës — which translates as the Rock of Kavajë — sits about 8 kilometres from Durrës, and its history stretches all the way back to 48 BC, when Julius Caesar and Pompey faced each other here during Caesar’s Civil War. This 160-metre-wide and 560-metre-long rock formation rises a hundred metres above sea level, offering breathtaking views shaped by millennia of natural forces. Few beaches in Europe let you sunbathe on ground this historically charged.
The Beach Itself
The water is crystal turquoise with pure golden fine sand, and the entrance to the sea is very smooth — no special footwear needed. The beach stretches for several kilometres and reaches up to 100 metres wide, with a gentle water entry and swimming depth reached at around 50 metres from shore. It’s the kind of beach that works for everyone — families with young children, solo travellers, and those simply looking for a quiet place to unwind.
What To Do
The beach is far from just a place to lie down. Water sports are well catered for, with catamarans and jet skis available, and there’s even a floating water park in the sea with inflatable structures — a favourite for both kids and adults. Beyond that, swimming, boating, and watching the sunset over the Adriatic are among the most popular ways to spend the day. Children’s playgrounds and sports fields are also available along the beach, alongside bars and restaurants of every type stretching the full length of the shore.
Who Is It For?
The beach suits all kinds of visitors — solo travellers, couples on a relaxation getaway, seniors, and families alike. The blend of natural beauty, tranquility, and easy access to amenities makes it ideal for anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-path escape that doesn’t sacrifice comfort.
What’s Nearby
The beach doesn’t exist in isolation. Just 5 miles away sits Durrës, with its ancient Roman amphitheatre, Venetian Tower, marina, and bustling city centre. Golem Beach begins just south of the rock and is backed by pine trees and dunes, with a gently sloping seabed perfect for children and a promenade with rescue services and sunbed rentals. The area gives you the peace of a coastal village with the convenience of a city close by.
When To Visit
Peak season runs from June to August, when the beach is at its most lively, while the quieter months offer a more relaxed and intimate experience. Summer evenings are particularly special — the sunsets over the Adriatic from this stretch of coast are genuinely hard to beat.
